  • Police Dog Training Is Essential To Get The Best Out Of The Dogâs Natural Abilities

  • Shar Pei Temperament

Nobody can deny that the Shar Pei breed is a special kind of dog, especially wonderful for having around as a family pet. They are calm tempered, loving, loyal and devoted dogs who after only hours will make their way into your hearts and you will know for certain why you made the decision to purchase a Shar Pei.

While each dog is different, Shar Peis tend to have some common characteristics that make them great for being a part of your family. It is a good idea to assess your lifestyle, the needs and personality types of a Shar Pei, and the interaction with the dog and your family before you make a purchase. If a Shar Pei puppy doesn’t match well with your lifestyle, you will be unhappy with your decision, and the puppy will not adapt well without a home in which he or she doesn’t fit.

Pros of Getting a Shar Pei

Shar Peis are loyal and loving dogs. They have the ability to make lifelong friends with their family members, and they are worth more than their weight in gold. A family who has patience and unconditional love cannot go wrong with a Shar Pei as a family pet. Shar Peis are known for their immediate and unbreakable bond with their family members, and they are wonderful, non-aggressive pets to have if children are in the family.

While Shar Peis are extremely loyal, they are friendly to strangers and guests in friendly situations, though they won’t think twice about putting people in their place if they feel their family is in danger. If the Shar Pei you choose is not your only family pet, they are likely to get along with others, as long as they are socialized properly. Allowing them to socialize themselves and take initiative when getting to know other family members is the best idea, as long as it is done under supervision so that potential conflicts do not get out of hand.

Cons of Getting a Shar Pei

While Shar Peis are loyal and cute and cuddly, they have some downsides to their personality and temperament. While these personality flaws can be overcome with practice and patience, a person should definitely know about them if they are considering purchasing a Shar Pei. One thing that people should know about and stay consistent with, is the fact that Shar Peis need a constant, confident handler.

If you, as the dog’s owner are soft, mild or inconsistent, they are likely to assume their position as the dominant party, and you could have behavioral problems that are difficult to break. Shar Peis work best with consistent training, and firm leadership. Because of this dominant tendency, they are likely to ignore commands from family members who have not developed a leadership role. As previously mentioned, it is absolutely crucial to socialize these dogs when they are young, as they are not naturally social dogs.

If you are patient and consistent, a Shar Pei may be a good family dog for you. They are undoubtedly loyal and make great family additions. They offer a lifetime of friendship, devotion and protection. Regardless of personality characteristics that may or may not suit you and your family, you should also consider the physical appearance of the Shar Pei. Having a Shar Pei means dealing with skin problems, allergies and constant grooming. While they are devoted by nature, they take a lot of loyalty and devotion from the owner as well, so it is important to make sure you are a good match before making a purchase.
