Inside the Mind of
a Shar Pei
Shar Peis are strong-willed, intelligent dogs that learn quickly
when you are training them. They are eager to please and come quick to your commands.
They have a naturally calm demeanor, though they also have the ability to get
territorial and aggressive if they feel threatened.
This behavior change
can come from a situation with another dog who attempts to claim dominance, a
traumatic event, or a significant change in lifestyle. These dogs are known for
getting along with other animals, but caution should always be exercised when
placing them in a new situation. A person who owns a Shar Pei can expect a loyal
companion who is by their side whenever they are needed, and a dedicated friend
for life.
Chinese Royalty
Shar Peis are in the middle size class
of non-sporting dogs, typically weighing between 40 and 50 pounds, and stand 18
to 20 inches tall. These estimates vary slightly between males and females, but
most fall into this range. Shar Peis have a coarse fur coat that ranges in color
from sable to light brown, with some having a variety of colors on their coat,
depending on their bloodline. Shar Peis are one of the less common dogs seen in
championships and dog shows, because of their lazy nature. They often need to
be encouraged to exercise and it doesn’t seem to come naturally.
While
other dogs have excess skin as puppies, the Shar Pei is the only dog with wrinkles
throughout adulthood. They make great family pets and tend to get along well with
other pets and children if they are socialized properly. Despite their calm demeanor
and attitude, Shar Peis make excellent guard dogs, as the history
and origin of the Shar Pei suggest they were used for guarding Chinese royalty.
