No Bark Collars: What You Should Know

There are currently three types of no bark collars commonly used on dogs. They all give good results, but you might be wondering if using them is ethical. As a dog owner, you should know about the no bark dog collar you want to use on your noisy pet.

    Citrus Spray Collars

Some no bark dog collars emit a citrus smell if the dog barks for long. Because the smell of citrus is not pleasant for dogs, they will eventually stop barking. These collars usually give a hissing sound before releasing the citrus smell, giving the dog a chance to stop the barking and saving itself from the spray. Professional dog trainers and veterinarians consider the use of these collars ethical, since the dog feels no pain and can even avoid the discomfort.

    Sonic and Ultrasonic Dog Collars

These collars work by emitting a very high pitched sound when the dog barks. It sounds to the dog very similar to the sound a dog's whistle makes. Humans can't hear this sound, but dogs can, and they soon learn to stop barking so that the sound goes away. Is this considered ethical by the experts? Yes. All they do is create a bit of annoyance to the dog. Note: This type of no bark collar is considered the least effective, as the dog can become used to the sound over time.

    Electronic No Bark Dog Collars

When the electronic collar “hears” the dog bark, it gives the dog a mild electrical shock. The shock isn't painful, it's similar to what you feel when you handle fabrics or walk over a rug. Once again, mostly just an annoyance – but this is the type of no bark collar that some people believe is unethical. This one isn’t just an annoyance; it physically does something to the dog. And well, some people think that's not ok. However, these collars are very effective for reducing excessive barking, so take them at least into consideration.

To make a dog behave and reduce excessive barking, you can choose between spray collars, sonic collars, or electrical shock collars. Most people have no problems with spray collars or sonic collars, but the idea of an electrical shock makes them think that shock collars aren't good for dogs. None of these methods are considered dangerous for dogs.

no bark collars are a great way to reduce excessive barking that isn't related to your dog's health. Although most people don't have a problem with them, some of them think shock collars are unethical. Nevertheless, all no bark dog collars are perfectly safe.
