If you have a dog, you must be responsible for it, which means that you'll
acquire some obligations. Sometimes, parents cede to their children's pressure
and get them a pup, but when the pup grows and it's not cute anymore, the
responsabilities of having it also increase.
Dogs (and cats too) don't live only on pet food, they also need water, a place
to sleep, a place where to relieve themselves, sun and protection from it, etc.
You might have though about installing a pet door to help with some of your
pet's needs, and if you haven't, then you should really consider it. Here is a
small list of things that have to be taken into consideration when selecting a
pet door, or even to decide if you should get one or not.
Safeness
Pet doors are generally safe when installed correctly. There are some people
that think that a burglar can break into their houses through a pet door, and in
a few cases, they might not be too far from the truth. If you have a large dog,
for example, the pet door that you would need might be big enough to compromise
the security of your home. Fortunately, you can try the same trick yourself
before buying the door; just use your arm and see how long you can stretch it
through the trap door in an attempt to reach the approximate distance of your
door knob. If you can reach your doorknob, obviously the door is not safe. Pet
doors designed for small pets usually don't have this problem.
Usability
Another factor to consider when thinking about installing one of these doors is
how useable it will be for your pet. Make sure that the pet door is big enough
for your animal (future growth considered as well) and that the door isn't so
heavy that the animal can't push it open.
Some people buy a pup and then are surprised to learn the responsabilities they acquired as well. Fortunately, installing a pet door can help you take care of some of your pet's needs. You can get a pet door online or at most pet supply stores.
