A Shar
Pei mix breed dog is a product of the Shar Pei being mated with another breed of
dog. Although, there has been a lot of inter breed mating going on through the
years, many dog aficionados prefer the breeds to stay within each breed of dog.
The reason why the Shar Pei mix dog as well as other mixed breeds have undergone
some criticism is due mainly to the fact that many inter bred dogs of different
breeds have recessive genes or have no culling. Culling may sound so cold and
impersonal but it is important to cull each litter for dogs that may have
defective genes or health problems which can be passed from the dog to its
offspring.
Since the Shar Pei is descended from
Chinese fighting dogs, many people have reservations with regards the safety of
the breed and even the Shar Pei mix breed dogs may be seen in suspicious light.
In spite of this, the unique Shar Pei has risen from obscurity and rarity to its
fame today. Many people who have Shar Pei mix breed dogs which look a lot like
pedigreed Shar Peis may sell these as pedigreed dogs instead of the Shar Pei mix
breeds that they really are.
Shar Pei Characteristics
There are two characteristics which are
very unforgettable in a Shar Pei. These two characteristics are its wrinkles and
its blue-black tongue. These characteristics may be seen in a Shar Pei mix but
sometimes they do not surface at all in Shar Pei mix offspring. The wrinkles of
the Shar Pei are very pronounced when it is still quite young. As it gets older,
the wrinkles tend to be less distinct and some dogs may actually smoothen out.
The coat with the wrinkles has short, coarse hair which may feel bristly to
touch. This in itself is a different texture from the usual short aired
varieties of dogs.
The other distinctive characteristic that
a Shar Pei has and may be present in Shar Pei mix dogs is the blue black tongue.
The Shar Pei shares this characteristic with the chow chow breed of dog, which
is why a lot of people believe that they are related in some way. This feature
can also be present in the Shar Pei mix if the gene pool is strong enough.
The breed standard for the Shar Pei has
the height of the breed at about 18 to 20 inches measured at the dog's withers.
Shows disqualify dogs that exceed the measurements or fall below it. The average
weight of the Shar Pei should be around 45 to 65 pounds. Both male and female
species of this breed have the same proportionate body although the male may
seem bulkier or more square than the female. The Shar Pei mix dog may inherit
these characteristics from the Shar Pei parent but the possibility of inheriting
the body structure of the other parent is also high. This is the same risk as
that of other dogs mixing with others.
The Shar Pei's head is large and filled
with a multitude of wrinkles especially in the face and ears area. The ears are
small and appear triangular in form. The ears are drop ears and are carried a
little above the side of the eyes. These ears are part and parcel of the Shar
Pei breed standards which means that if the Shar Pei mix inherits these, it help
to make the dog appear more like a Shar Pei than its other parent. Many describe
the muzzle of the Shar Pei pedigreed dog as similar t that of a hippo. This
means that the end of the muzzle appears wide and the nose area is broad. The
breed ha a large nose which may seem out of proportion with its other facial
features but still mange to look quite at home in the Shar Pei's face.
Temperament
It may follow that the Shar Pei mix breed
offspring may inherit some of the Shar Pei's temperament. This dog is actually
quite aloof and apart when it comes to strangers or newcomers. It carries itself
with regal aplomb and has a slightly royal look to it when it appears to look
strict with its scowling wrinkles. In spite of these, the Shar Pei mix breed may
inherit its pedigreed parent's devotion to its human family.
