  • Emergency Care for Your Shar Pei

Having and raising an adorable Shar Pei puppy is a lot of fun with especially rewarding moments and memories to last a lifetime. They offer loyalty, dedication, protection and a lifetime of love and companionship if you follow proper Shar Pei care. This includes taking them for regular veterinary check-ups, bathing them properly and keeping them fed and exercised well. This also includes knowing what to do in case an emergency occurs.

You need to be well prepared to handle emergencies at any given time, as your vet will not always be readily available. Not only that, you need to know what to do before a vet is available, because the first few minutes of a true emergency can be the most important. The following information will help you determine your role in your Shar Pei care in emergency situations, and the best way to help your cuddly companion when he or she needs you most.

    Urgent but Not an Emergency

While some situations constitute first aid as opposed to emergencies, it is still wise to know what to do so that you can make your Shar Pei comfortable in these situations. If a puppy gets into something like antifreeze or other poison, the typical course of action is to give a dog hydrogen peroxide to make them vomit and rid their stomach of the chemical.

This is not a wise idea in cases of bleach or other corrosive situations, because it can cause corrosion and irritation to the esophagus. Curious puppies often get themselves into curious situations, and are frequently bit or stung by insects, and these typically don’t warrant medical attention. The best idea is to apply pressure and ice the area, giving antihistamine if necessary.

Emergency Situations That You Can Handle

On a more serious note, dogs can suffer from tragedies like burns, car accidents, heat, shock and hypothermia and require immediate medical attention for intensive care. However, the first few moments following the incident are crucial and require you to take initiative for your Shar Pei care. If your puppy is found with burns or burn marks, find the affected area and cover it with a cool cloth or ice in small areas.

If your dog gets in a fight with another animal and gets bit, clean the affected area, apply pressure and get your dog to his or her vet as soon as possible. Dogs that live near the road are at risk for getting hit by cars, and a severe enough accident can cause shock. In both cases, the owner should calm the dog down, cover them with blankets, and contact their veterinarian immediately.

Heat exhaustion is a problem especially a problem with Shar Peis because of their massive wrinkles, and should be treated with cool water and veterinary treatment. Oppositely, hypothermia can be treated with a warm bath or blankets, followed by a visit to the doctor.

In general, Shar Pei care is not difficult to stay on top of, and emergency care is important information to know. The first few minutes of Shar Pei care in an emergency situation can mean the difference between life and death in some situations.

It is crucial to know the basics of Shar Pei care if you are going to take on the responsibility of a dog. Shar Peis require special medical attention in numerous cases, and a caring, loving caretaker is best for their general well being. Along the same lines, you should consider thinking about caring for your Shar Pei as he ages.
