Girls are notorious for spending
hours at a time in the bathroom, primping and poking until they look absolutely
perfect, and we make fun of them because we find it silly. The odd thing is, when
someone gets a Shar Pei puppy and decides to turn him or her into a show dog,
they do the exact same thing regardless of sex.
Most dog owners take extreme
pride in the way their dog looks, and it only gets more intense when they are
entered into competitions and shows. Some even say it becomes an obsessive quality
over time. So whether you’re an amateur and just here for brushing, or you’re
here to get the whole package, you will find plenty of information about your
Shar Pei grooming and make him or her look absolutely stunning.
Shar Pei
Grooming to Perfection
There are tons of Shar Pei grooming tricks of the
trade, you can learn on your own, or you can call in a professional groomer to
perk your pup up with a day spa treatment. The first two options are of little
charge to you, though manual labor is obviously a factor. The third option, hiring
a groomer to come in and primp your pup can be pricey, but may be worth avoiding
getting yourself up to your ears in soap suds. If you have decided against hiring
a groomer and want to get your hands in and take responsibility for your puppy’s
great coat, here are some tips to keep them looking great from head to tail.
Tried
and True Tricks
The coat should be shiny and clean, though not washed too
often. Bathing them too often washes away the natural oils that are needed for
keeping the coat shiny and soft. It is a good idea to brush your puppy before
you give him a bath. This may seem like a backwards approach to Shar Pei care,
but the reason for the suggestion is that it pulls out the dead skin and hair,
allowing you to get closer to the skin for cleaning.
There are plenty of
other body parts that need TLC every so often, but sometimes they get overlooked.
The nails for example get overlooked frequently, but owners should be watchful
of them getting too long, as they can get painful and cause balance issues.
Your
dog’s teeth should also be brushed on a regular basis, with meat flavored toothpaste,
made especially for canine use. Depending on your dog’s temper, you may be hesitant
to fulfill this important task, and if so, you may need to leave it up to the
veterinarian during scheduled checkups.
Don’t Forget!
Another important
task in regards to Shar Pei grooming is their ears. Because the ear canal is so
short, they are prone to ear infections, so keeping them clean with cotton buds
is a must. Lastly, their wrinkles get dismissed in regular Shar Pei care. Because
the skin folds are so heavy and solid, it is absolutely crucial that they stay
clean.
This often means having to periodically lift up each skin fold and
clean underneath it. Otherwise, moisture and dirt will collect in the folds, causing
an uncomfortable moldy rash. While all of these tasks can be performed with household
items, you may wish to read up on what
