A large part
of Shar Pei care is grooming, and people sometimes fail to recognize that. Often
times, pet owners assume that if their dog is bathed, they are properly groomed,
but such is no the case. Grooming your Shar Pei is very complex, but can be easy
with the correct tools, supplies and tips.
The following information will
help you decide what you need for one of the most important parts of Shar Pei
care, as well as some helpful hints for doing so in a timely and calm fashion,
as not all puppies are eager to be groomed. Grooming should be done in a calm
environment that is not threatening or scary, and he or she should feel safe during
the process.
One at a Time
The supplies for grooming alone can cost
a fair amount of money, especially if they are bought at one time. A good idea,
if you are looking for a puppy, is to start buying grooming supplies periodically
and look for sales or specials. It is not a good idea to purchase or take used
supplies, as infections and other dermatologic diseases are easily spread that
way, and you don’t want your puppy getting anything of the sort.
The following
is a list of grooming supplies that you will most likely need for your puppy,
but they are not absolutely necessary for basic Shar Pei care. If you do not have
all of the supplies, do not worry, just do your best with what you have, and if
you have other household products that safely substitute, it is fine to use them
as well.
Basic Grooming Needs
Your most basic need for grooming
and Shar Pei care is a place to groom them properly. This could mean an outside
water hose (be careful the water and the weather are temperature-appropriate),
an indoor bathtub, or a sink when they are little. These places should all be
equipped with non-stick pads or surfaces, to give them the security they need
not to slip or slide.
It is a good idea to get some sort of grooming mitt
or old rag so that you can scrub their fur and skin. The best idea for grooming
is to get a shampoo or cleaning agent that is appropriate for dogs. Many people
assume they can use household products or shampoo, but they often contain allergens
that irritate the dog’s skin, especially Shar Peis.
A metal comb or bristle
brush is a good idea to have, for before and after the bathing, as there is dead
hair to remove beforehand and dead skin to remove following the bath. Simple supplies
that are around the house are things such as cotton balls, towels, etc. For dogs
who are prone to ear infections, you may need an ear cleaner, available at most
pet supply stores.
Another major component of Shar Pei care that few people
recognize is the nail clipping. If you choose to have your dog’s nails clipped
at home, you will need a pair of dog nail clippers, complete with grips and slanted
blades. Lastly, you will need dental care products for keeping your puppy’s teeth
and gums healthy and clean.
Now that you know what you may likely need
for your Shar Pei care, you may wish to begin buying supplies now. After making
a list about supplies, you will want to educate yourself on expert
grooming tips for your Shar Pei. These tips will help assure that you can
groom your dog effectively, without much hassle or ado.
