Congratulations
on your new puppy! You’ve no doubt been waiting for this day with excitement and
anticipation, but in the back of your mind, something is lurking and you suddenly
feel like you’re not an expert when it comes to Shar Pei care at home, how to
keep him or her safe, or how to keep your valuables in their current condition.
Some of it will be a learning process, some will be instinctual, and other
things you can read right out of a book. You also have to get to know your puppy’s
behavior and what interest him so you can clear those things out of his reach.
Below you will find instructions for basic Shar Pei care and safety so you can
continue to enjoy your new friend.
The Basics of Shar Pei Care and Safety
The
main thing to remember is that your new puppy is a lot like having a nine month
old baby around the house. They are learning about mobility and independence and
are constantly curious about what they can get into, which is absolutely everything
within their reach. When considering Shar Pei care and safety never underestimate
the power of your puppy.
Eventually you will have the opportunity to train
your dog to stay away from certain things, but until such time, you will need
to reposition things. These things are likely to include but are not limited to
shoes, socks, furniture (especially leather!), kids’ toys, anything made out of
wood, toilet paper and anything else you could imagine. Shar Pei puppies are not
trying to misbehave; they are simply cutting teeth and need to satisfy their curiosity.
The best way to avoid such issues is to keep your puppy occupied with plenty of
toys in different textures.
Shar Pei Care and Hazardous Chemicals
Many
people get forgetful in this area of Shar Pei care and it is actually one of the
most important things to remember when keeping your pet safe. Keep chemicals above
countertop level or behind a door that cannot be opened easily. The dangerous
thing about chemicals such as household cleaners and garden materials is that
your puppy may eat them and you could not even know until a reaction has started.
Chemicals can be harmful or even deadly, so it is best not to take a chance.
Look
Who’s Boss
One area of Shar Pei care where people falter is discipline
and solitude. It’s okay to tell your dog “no,” and its important that he learn
who the boss is early on. Don’t get into the habit of letting him run the household
when you are sleeping or away from home. Tell your puppy it’s crate time and eventually
he will go in without a fuss. Your experiences with Shar
Pei training will become easier and more rewarding each time you work with
them, and eventually you will have a well-trained dog that is safe and loyal.
