  • General Shar Pei Care

Shar Pei puppies are undeniably a handful, and there is a lot to remember when in comes to Shar pei care, especially in regards to health and general well being. However, if you discipline yourself and keep on top of the maintenance that takes to keep a puppy healthy, your Shar Pei puppy will love and appreciate you and grace you with his longevity for many years.

While Shar Pei care is a lot to remember, especially in the beginning, it will get easier over time as it becomes habit. The following information gives you some guidelines as to what you need to stay on top of regarding Shar Pei care, and some tips for staying on top of those things, making yours and your puppy’s life easier and more productive.

    Vaccines are Important

Your Shar Pei puppy’s health is the most important component in Shar Pei care. Vaccines fit into the group of preventative healthcare techniques, and are absolutely crucial in your dog’s health, and prevent him from getting diseases that can range from asymptomatic to deadly, and can turn around in a heartbeat. Few people have the ability to remember every single veterinary visit and every vaccine, so it is a wise idea to get a date book and record upcoming visits in the future so that you do not forget when it comes time.

Simple Things Mean Much More than You Might Think

Simple things like the amount of water your Shar Pei puppy drinks, how often he needs to go to the bathroom, the state of his ears if he is prone to ear infections, and the length of his toenails are easy to pass off and forget, especially if your Shar Pei pup isn’t overly demanding. Few people actually give their puppy the amount of water they need, as daily tasks get placed first, and sometimes those duties get put aside.

Ear infections are hard to detect in dogs, especially if the owner doesn’t check them regularly. Shar Pei puppies are prone to ear infections because the ear canal is so short, so it is crucial that you check them weekly. Typically by the time a dog starts to show signs of an ear infection, they are in extreme pain and the ear infection is pretty serious. Your best bet in regards to Shar Pei care is to check them weekly for redness or buildup, and if you are concerned, ask your veterinarian.

The other thing that frequently gets looked past is the nails. It is your responsibility, if you don’t want to cut them yourself, to get your puppy into the vet when they need trimming. The reason for this is, if they get too long, it is extremely painful for the dog and can end up causing other problems in the legs and joints because they compensate for their step.
Look for obvious signs of problems like limping, or hesitation to walk on hard surfaces like tile or wood floors. Aside from general care, you should also familiarize yourself with health concerns facing the Shar Pei, as they have some breed-specific diseases and health problems that you should know about and keep an eye on so they can be treated accordingly.
