Shar
Pei puppies are so much fun to cuddle and hold and play with, right? This is true,
but there is a lot more to raising a Shar Pei puppy, and that comes as a bit of
a shock to some people. Getting a new puppy means getting a furry new friend to
hold and cuddle and love, but it also means getting up in the middle of the night
to let the puppy out, cleaning up messes when the puppy can’t hold it, and repairing
furniture.
No doubt the puppy will utilize your furniture for a makeshift
bone, keeping track of vaccines, affording veterinarian bills and training the
puppy to behave in an acceptable manner. Along with that comes a relationship
built on trust and love, and with enough patience and care, the two of you can
be best friends for years to come. The following will give you some information
about what to expect when you’re considering bringing a new puppy into the household.
Practice
Attention
First of all, think sleepless nights. If you’ve had children,
you will remember this stage fondly. Your new Shar Pei pup has recently left the
comfort of his or her parents and littermates, and he is bound to be lonely, sad
and insecure. While getting up in the middle of the night may not seem like a
fun idea, he will need you to be reasonably attentive, as this is the time he
will learn that you are their main source of comfort. Let him know that everything
will be fine, and remember to remain calm and patient, as it won’t last long.
Expenses
and Finances
Secondly, let’s not forget about the expenses that come with
a new puppy. Hands down, puppies and dogs are expensive, and few people realize
how much money can be spent in just a matter of months. There are vaccines that
are mandatory for your puppy’s health and well being, and they require not only
fees for the shots themselves, but the doctor visits as well. Food and treats
are also another expense that should be considered, so it’s best to have some
money saved before you consider buying a new Shar Pei puppy.
Responsible
Training
Misbehavior is another thing frequently overlooked when someone
thinks they are ready for a dog. People see the perfect dog on television and
assume that’s what they’re getting, but in reality that dog has been trained umpteen
times in order to behave the way they do. Puppies misbehave because they are curious,
not because they are naughty.
You should keep your valuables out of reach,
and be consistent every time the puppy chews on something he shouldn’t. Instead
of striking the puppy or yelling at him, remind him gently that there are other
toys that are acceptable and replace it immediately. Shouting at or hitting the
puppy only causes confusion and fear; it does not correct the behavior.
There
are several other things that should be considered on a case by case basis when
thinking about getting a new Shar Pei puppy. It’s a life changing event, as most
dogs become a regular part of the family. But with the right tools and the right
attitude, it can be an enjoyable experience with many memories along the way.
After making this consideration, you should now educate yourself on how
to choose the right Shar Pei puppy so that you can begin the next step in
your journey.
