I have tried so many dry foods and they both hate them. I have a german shep mix and a shar pei mix. Both very picky eaters. I put meat (Natural Balance Food Rolls cut up into tiny pices and spread it around and normally they eat only 1 cup of the 2 cups i give them. Canidae, Blue Buffalo, Holstic Select, Avoderm, Formms ( had only one dog at time but the dog that i did have sort of likedit) Purnia, Chef Michaels (i had no choice to buy it because i ran out of my Blue buffalo and they loved it! I know its terrible for them but they went crazy and licked the bottom of the bowl!)

what can i do i know there is Raw food diet but its way to expensive for two dogs.
thankyou but can you explain http://www.petco.com/product/111178/Only-Natural-Pet-Fresh-Freeze-Dried-Chicken-and-Veggie-Patties-Pet-Food.aspx?CoreCat=DogFlink_DehydratedFood how much would i have to give 2 dogs for 1 meal. and would it be cheaper to just cook up some meat?

I use a product called PetMix and cook homemade meals for my dog. I used to raw feed but it got too complicated and was too much work to prepare meals for my dog and my family every day. I make petmix in big batches and freeze half of it. since it is cooked with fresh meat it keeps a long time just in the fridge. If you are going to cook for your dog this really is the easiest way I have found.

My husband and I have a 8 month old purebred Siberian Husky, Lexi. About 3 months ago, we adopted another dog, Maggie; she's a boxer/shar pei mix and she's about 9 months old. (...)

My husband and I have a 8 month old purebred Siberian Husky, Lexi. About 3 months ago, we adopted another dog, Maggie; she's a boxer/shar pei mix and she's about 9 months old. We first noticed our Lexi's aggressiveness when it came down to chew toys. If we give them both toys, Lexi will go over and steal Maggie's toy and hoard it. If Maggie even comes near her, she goes wild and starts attacking Maggie! Even drawing blood at times. We always then lock her up in her kennel for a while. Then it started happening with food. Lexi will finish hers first and then "stalk" Maggie while she's eating and my husband or I have to stand in-between them to keep anything from happening. What can we do to stop this behavior?! I'm almost to the point of giving her up for adoption to a family with no children or other animals.
**We did socialize the 2 of them before we brought Maggie home. That was one of the requirements at the shelter before we could adopt Maggie. They get along really great, and they play fight all day. Lexi is and has always thought of herself to be an Alpha. My husband and I noticed that behavior in her soon after we got her, and we are constantly trying to break that mentality in her. Sorry I didn't specify all the details about when we got Maggie, but they were socialized prior to us bringing her home.

I had this problem 7 years ago.

1. Don't give your husky up for adoption she has good reason to act this way as she lived there first and she see's it as her territory.

I had a 1 year old female westie called Flora. We then rescued another 1 year westie named Becky who was slightly larger so of course Becky wanted to be the dominant one because she was bigger, but it was Flora's home and garden so she thought she was in charge. We had to feed them seperatly and sometimes still do. They will growl over toys so It's best if you give the husky her toy whilst playing with Maggie. then after maybe 10 minutes swap round. or if you and your husband are both at home you could play with a dog each.

Once Lexi has finished her food take her to another room and play with her so Maggie can finish in peace.

We've had our westies for 7 years together and although they still growl and argue sometimes they have only ever had 1 real fight which was over who got to mother our new schnauzer puppy. Eventually one of your dogs will become the alpha dog. (in our case it was actually the newer dog Becky who is in charge)

We can't ever seperate our dogs because they are now like sisters and both pine if the other is missing.

I have a nine week old mini shar-pei and when I take her on a walk she wants to go, go, go! She literally runs for 1.5 miles and I am walking of course because her legs are so short. For the past three days we complete 1.5 miles in 30 minutes or less. I never drag her, she seems to really enjoy it. But then I've been hearing this could hurt her? Is that true? Should I stop?
First of all, there ARE mini shar pei www.mspca.net. And, I asked my vet about PARVO. He said there is no risk where I live as long as I keep her on the pavement. He has NEVER seen a case in my town. Also, she does cry, for example when I leave her alone for a few minutes or when I am in the shower, so I am pretty sure she would let me know if I was hurting her on the walk. Anyway, thank you all for the answers, I think for the sake of her joints I shouldn't let her go so far. This helped, much appreciated!

Exercising your dog is good. If your dog doesn't seem to mind, then it should be fine.

I'm looking after her until i find her a home. I've never had a dog before and have no idea what to feed her or how much … or how often. She's a medium sized dog, and i was told she's about two years old.

I really need some help, any advice will be appreciated
Any high-quality kibble will do. People will tell you about the benefits of organic, raw, natural, or even vegan diets, but for a short-term and first-timer, I would go to a pet store (not a grocery or convenience store) and buy a bag of adult maintenance dog food, if possible, buy the brand she's already used to.

There will be guidelines for the proper amount on the bag itself based on her weight, tweak these until she's the proper weight and neither gaining or losing pounds quickly. The best way to check her weight is to feel her ribs, they should be felt easily with no padding of fat over them but should not be easily seen. Divide the proper amount into two meals a day, and ask her to do something for you before she eats - if she knows "sit" or "lay down" you can work on a "stay" as well.

Good luck!

i would like to avoid some possible skin issues with my shar pei. And i was wondering if a specific diet would take care of alot of the shar pei skin rashes?

Any diet that has additives for skin issues, a high quality diet with no colors or preservatives. Blue Buffalo, Canidae, Solid Gold, etc. You may also want to have her on some Omega 3 caps to help. Keep the wrinkles clean, and use a good shampoo. Good Luck!

I have a one year old Shar Pei mix and when she younger she would dig a lot in the yard (learnt mostly from the mini dachshund we have as well. Now she digs up the yard and she's a lot bigger so the whole are a lot bigger. She gets lots of attention because someone is always home with her. She runs outside so she gets plenty of exercise. I want to give her toys but I'm afraid the dash will fight over the toys as he gets aggressive over toys and bones.
What eles can I do to keep my dog from digging?

Dogs dig for pretty much 3 reasons;

- they are bored

- they are hot and the dirt is cool

- there are grubs /worm in the dirt that they can smell

If your dog is overweight then it is not getting enough exercise and is bored. A backyard is nice but dogs don't get exercise in a backyard unless it's a greyhound who will make their own track.

My terrier ( champion diggers) doesn't dig because he gets to run a half hour every other day.

The reason I'm asking this is I have a mutt (Vet says he has Great Dane, Black Lab, and Pitbull in him. (...)

The reason I'm asking this is I have a mutt (Vet says he has Great Dane, Black Lab, and Pitbull in him. Also, there is another dog in the neighborhood that looks just like mine that the owner says the same thing about its breed.) that we found as a puppy, maybe six weeks old, wandering in our front yard. When he was about a year old, he mated with out other mutt (Dad found her and 3 other puppies abandoned on a highway, we kept one and gave the others away. Vet says that she is a Jack Russell Terrier-Coyote mix with many, many features of other breeds. Medium sized dog) and had 10 puppies. We gave away 7 and kept the other 3 because no one wanted them. Since it would be cheaper to get the Dane mix nuetered, we did that instead of fixing the female. The day we got him home from the vet, he attacked out older dog who was probably 11-12 at the time. We called the vet and she said he would stop and it was a hormone imbalance from getting snipped. We have 8 dogs now, 3 original dogs from 2 litters of a dog that died at 14 in 2005, the coyote mix, the dane mix, and the 3 puppies. We put the 3 original dogs and one puppy together because one puppy attacks another puppy for some reason, in one group; and the dane mix, coyote mix, and the other 2 puppies in the other. We switch the two groups around every 2-3 hours between outside and inside. Depending who switched the dogs, sometimes the Dane mix gets to, and attacks the 12 year old male because one dog wasn't put into a safe place. The Dane mix is perfect with people and all of the other dogs, but he attacks male dogs. My parent and I want to get the dog euthanized because we are scared of it killing someone or something. It has attacked the 12-year-old dog maybe 5-6 times over the last two years. I have never told my parents this, but on two separate occasions, I took the Dane mix on a walk and he tried to attack another dog. Once it was a Saint Bernard- Shar Pei mix, which is male and about 11 years old, and roughly 2.5 times larger than my dane mix. The Shar Pei mix is the same way, it only attacks males and is perfect with people. It was tied up to a large tree with a chain made to hold 3 tons. The other time it was a pitbull-rottweiler mix but I got control of my dog before it did anything..

My neighbors kids are now to an age where they play outside and play with balls and things like that. About a month ago, we put up a 5 foot chain link fence separating our 6 foot wood fence and our house to make an area where dogs couldn't go. One of the neighbor kids accidentally threw a ball over the fence, and our Dane mix was outside. Only I was home and the kid hopped the fence thinking no one was home, and got his ball. The Dane mix went crazy at that kid, he went into a mini frenzy and probably would have killed the kid if it weren't for the fence. Our Dane mix had never seen the kid and I guess was just protecting his territory, but he had never acted like that to any human before. Yesterday, I watched him climb the chain link fence to go to the bathroom on the other side. We are worried that the Dane mix might attack a person or kill another dog. It would be a bad idea to give him away because he could kill someone or something.

And back to my two questions in the title. What methods do vets use to euthanize dogs? I've read about IV injections but are there other ways? I would think that putting a dog in a sealed chamber and pumping it full of nitrogen or helium or any other other inert gas would do a better job than an IV injection with less pain. It works with people (see Exit Bag, a suicide bag that goes over your head and is pumped full of an inert gas to commit suicide) in just a few minutes, so I'd think that it would work well with animals also.

And now for my second question, based on the info I gave you should I have my dog put down?

To answer your first question, I'll ask you one. Have you or a member of your family ever been put under anesthesia for a surgical procedure? If so, you experienced pretty much what a dog would experience when it's euthanized, except that it never wakes up. The euthanasia drug itself is an overdose of a barbiturate that stops the heart and breathing muscles and is administered through an IV catheter or with a needle and syringe. Prior to giving the euthanasia drug, some vets administer a sedative tranquilizer either in pill form or by a painless injection under the skin, like a vaccination. The animal is completely relaxed and almost asleep when the barbiturate is administered. Whether or not a sedative is given, the animal feels no pain when it is euthanized.

The answer to your second question is a whole lot harder. You definitely can't re-home your Dane mix since his behavior is so unstable. You might consider talking with a vet about using drugs to help curb his aggression. There's a possibility that he has a brain disorder or is experiencing Canine Rage Syndrome, which is similar to bipolar episodes in people. You could also consult a behavior specialist (not one with a Cesar Milan mindset) to see if there's a way to deal with the dog. Even using these options you will have a long row to hoe if you decide to keep him. My advice would be to talk with a vet and a behavioralist and come to a decision with their help.

alrite boys choose from these breeds!: (these are the breeds that are available in my AREA)

American Bully

American Eskimo Dog

American Pit Bull Terrier

Basset Hound

Beagle

Belgian Malinois

Chinese Shar-pei

Chow Chow

Cocker Spaniel

Collie

Dachshund

Doberman Pinscher

Dogo Argentino

French Bulldog

German Shepherd Dog

Golden Retriever

Great Dane

Labrador Retriever

Maltese

Miniature Pinscher

Miniature Schnauzer

Neapolitan Mastiff

Pekingese

Pembroke Welsh Corgi

Pomeranian

Poodle

Pug

Rottweiler

Saint Bernard

Samoyed

Scottish Terrier

Shetland Sheepdog

Shiba Inu

Shih Tzu

Siberian Husky

Staffordshire Bull Terrier

Standard Schnauzer

Welsh Corgi

West Highland White Terrier

Yorkshire Terrier

Why don't we start by ruling out the dogs that do not fit your criteria above: Several of the breeds far exceed your "maximum" size limit for example (St. Bernard, Great Dane, Mastiff). Husky's can never be off leash trained. A lot of the breeds you've chosen have considerable grooming requirements and a majority of the breeds you chose fall under the "aggressive dog" category (doberman, bully breed, pits, huskies, bulldogs, rotties etc)

American Bully
American Eskimo Dog
American Pit Bull Terrier
Basset Hound
Belgian Malinois
Bull Terrier
Bulldog
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
Chinese Shar-pei
Chow Chow
Collie
Doberman Pinscher
Dogo Argentino
German Shepherd Dog
Great Dane
Neapolitan Mastiff
Rottweiler
Saint Bernard
Samoyed
Shetland Sheepdog
Siberian Husky
Staffordshire Bull Terrier

I'm ruling out the following breeds that will not fit a "jogger" lifestyle either they cannot breath and cannot exert themselves due to their squashed nose features or all they require is a walk around the block to be sufficiently exercised.

Basset Hound
Shih Tzu
Pug
Pekingese
Yorkshire Terrier
Boston Terrier
French Bulldog
Bull dog

The following dogs are smaller than your min size of a Beagle:
Chihuahua
Min Pin
Yorkshire Terrier
French Bulldog
Boston Terrier
Pekingese

These are the only dogs that will fit your criteria, all are low on the grooming scale, easily trained and can be trained to be off leash, as long as the dog is sufficiently exercised and tired out then it will have no problems laying quietly while you "get away" from things.

Beagle
Boxer
Labrador Retriever
Dalmatian
