Why are Shar Pei breeders as unpleasant as their dogs?

I have lots of experience with lots of dog breeds. Most vet techs will tell you that Shar Peis are nasty to deal with. Yes, training will benefit any breed, but years of experience in 3 different states teaches you a few things. Trying to vilify me for sharing personal experience doesn't help anyone. There are certain breeds that require more careful handling than others. Golden Retrievers for instance are rarely nasty at the vet. Shar Peis are, and promoting the breed to people with little experience in dog handling is irresponsible and common to zealot breeders. BTW I have nothing against responsible breeders in touch with reality.
This is in response to a post earlier, by a person clearly inexperienced and only interested in the breed's wrinkles. A person wrote an answer and started with "Amy M doesn't know what she's talking about". This angered me as I was sharing what I OBSERVED working with many breeds on a daily basis for years. People who choose a dog breed based on looks often end up disappointed and the dogs end up in another home. Because I love dogs, I try to get people to take care to choose a dog wisely. The particular breeder that responded in such a way was being defensive and not very responsible in the long run.
One socio-economic area? Try wealthy (mostly)and non-wealthy areas in 3 different states. And again, experience is experience and personal experience cannot be argued with.
Nancy M, I think you are being judgemental yourself. Vet techs work long hours, put up with all sorts of unpleasantness, witness daily heartbreak and do it all for low pay and often times, no benefits. Sorry you met nasty ones. I treat people very well, unless I'm attacked.

Holy Cow! We had this discussion one day at the vets office (where I work) and none of us have EVER encountered a nice shar pei. There owners are a rare bunch on their own and are usually very rude, angry, and short tempered.
Now this isn't to say over owner/breeder/ and dog is like this but we were talking about how odd it was none of us have met a nice one. Some of my co-workers have 25+ years experience and they agree.

Interesting to hear that. The few I ever dealt with were not problem dogs, but perhaps I just met nice shar-peis. Or perhaps the owners were more conscientious of the way their dogs were allowed to behave.

Sorry but some of us might be out of the loop. Something clearly prompted your question but it is hard to tell what. Who is it that tried to villify you and how?
I dont generally like generalizations:) but thats just me…in general, that is.

Well, I work at a vet clinic and I have seen pleasant and nasty dogs from almost every dog breed. I have learned to never judge a dog based on it's breed, I judge each as an individual. I have never met a mean Shar-Pei, but I have met pleanty of mean Golden Retrievers and Labs, and I think the reason is just becuase they are so much more common where I live. The most common reason an animal is aggressive is because an owner didn't do research on the breed they chose, and they didn't properly socialize or train it.

Whaaat…. hone, you are showing your lack of experience and rather ignorance based perspective. I have dealt with a LOT of poorly tempered, nasty Goldens and a LOT of wonderfully tempered Shar Peis… heck, handled them for a while and went to the Shar Pei National Specialty where there were hundreds of Shar Pei and while as with any breed there were iffy tempered ones, there were a lot of nicely tempered ones. What some vet tech sees in a specific socioeconomic area and decides to recall doesn't define a breed or the world… No one is 'trying to vilify' you for anyting = your personal experience is limited at best and your defensiveness evidences tht you are as unpleasant as you paint a breed you know little about to be. I don't breed Shar Peis or Goldens but fifty plus years of training, trialing and showing almost any breed or mix you want to come up with has shown me that you can't make such inane, ignorance based blanket statements about any group of canines - now humans, that is another kettle of fish! hahaha Several of my best friends, and the nicest most giving and loving people I know are Shar Pei breeders and some of the meanest and shallowest I have known have been vet techs :) must mean all vet techs are mean and shallow, huh? hahahaha

I have two Shar-Peis. One who loves people and she behaves great when going to the vet. My other one, however, hates going to the vet. She has have a muzzle on when she goes because I don't know what she might do. As far as being around strangers she loves to follow them around from behind barking, which usually freaks them out. She's only playing, I tell them! She does it to me when we're playing too. I raised them together and they are cousins. I spent a lot of time socializing them, yet they are completely different in the way they act. I've raised dogs my entire life and know how to handle them. Also, my sister breeds Shar-Peis so I got them both from the same place at the same time.

unfortunatly peis ARE a difficult breed, they are bred to be warey of strangers and most have dog agression issues this is the breed, and unfortunatly makes it somewhat difficult for vets/other professionals to work properly with the breed BUT i have every respect for breeders who continue to breed thier dogs as they should be…
THESE breeders however would also understand their dogs and never put the vet or anyone else in danger, a GOOD breeder knows their dog and takes the trainging and physical saftey measures nessicary (ie strong training and muzzling if nessicary.

the only breeders ive ever met that are as you described are generally the bad breeders id personally never want to buy a dog from…

unfortunatly ive had more bad experineces with labs and goldens than i have with "warey" dogs i can handle standoffish breeds like peis and dogos, i can handle naturally dog agressive breeds like the bullies…
its the badly bred high energy untrained ones that have given me issues…and like with small dogs alot of people think "my dogs a "nice" breed i dont have to train it..
just like some so called breeders seem to think "im only interested in breeding my dogs i dont have to train or show it!"

sorry you've had bad experiences, the breed is a very interesting and a GREAT breed for those that are able to handle them and train them PROPERLY. there certainly not a breed for ANYONE to take on lightly, but unfrotunatly many out there see rare breed and wrinkles and think they can make a few bucks by breeding one too!
