I can't walk my 9 month old shar pei mix. Are some dogs untrainable?
I got him from the humane society about 1 month ago and I've tried to walk him but I don't see hope. He's fine indoors but when he gets out he loses his sanity. I know it's only been a few weeks but he doesn't even stop or slow down when I have the choker chain on him. What dog does that? I would think natural reflex in a working brain whether it's operating on instinct or reasoning would pull back , stop or slow down. I'm usually an easy going and patient but this dog is wearing me thin. I can't tell you how I hate to yell or hit anything but he only responds when I yell at him. Maybe I picked wrong dog. Please help. Is it just me or are some dogs just more difficult and not fit for some personalities? I would feel like a quitter and guilty if I took him back .I would appreciate any help.
No dog is untrainable. He is probably not used to being on a leash. Have you tried a Halti head collar or Gentle Leader? They seem to work miracles on walks.

No dog is untrainable. He is probably not used to being on a leash. Have you tried a Halti head collar or Gentle Leader? They seem to work miracles on walks.

First off this dog has probaly never really been walked so it will take time. Enroll in a basic obedience course with him. I personally don't like choker chains they do no good. There are so many other products out there that have a much better effect. Some breeds just end up pulling and pulling until they choke themselves and thats why I don't like them since they do more damage than good.

Let's get one thing straight, you are most DEFINITELY using the choke chain wrong. When you use it incorrectly by just slapping it on and thinking it'll fix things, yes, dogs will act like it's not even on.
No dog is untrainable. I think it's like one in a million chance for someone to get truly an insane dog that cannot be trained and needs to be put down.
How about taking obedience classes? Obviously you are loosing your patience and need some outside guidance. It's really worth the money!
If you honestly cannot come up with $100-$200 then work on it yourself. Ditch the chain, get a Gentle Leader. When you put it on this is NOT the fix. This is a tool to keep him from pulling so you then can work with him. When he walks by your side, treat him and show him that's the correct thing to do. When he's pulling, the Gentle Leader will pull his head around so he cannot and you can correct him.
It appears to me you do obedience training just in the house, correct? Try training in local pet stores with distractions, outside, etc. You need him to focus on you in all situations. So really try and branch out. Make sure in public areas you have very enticing treats that he doesn't get otherwise so he will work for you.
Good luck!

all dogs are trainable.
Simply putting a chocker chain on a dog doesnt stop them from pulling.. if you dont know how to properly apply and use a chocker all you will succeed in doing is injuring your dog.
Get a trainer to show you how to properly train your dog.

Along with using a Gentle Leader, take lots of treats with you on your walks. Give him one whenever he does something good–this is called positive reinforcement and the idea is that he will want to continue the behavior to get more treats. Hope this helps!

I may be the only one here who doesn't like 'gentle' leaders.
I've seen way too many that were not sized for the dog but for the size he may become.
The owner is behind the dog. The dog is pulling on the lead and the 'gentle' (what a misnomer that name is) is cutting into the dogs face right below his eye ball.
The owners don't know it because they can't see it. I've told many what was happening to their dogs.
Gentle leaders are the lazy way to not train a dog to walk on a leash.
It isn't difficult to train a dog to walk on a loose-lead.

I would try the Premier Gentle Leader Easy Walk harness. I have two of them for my dogs, and it has worked wonders for them to walk nicely without pulling. I have also worked with them naming when they're pulling and when they're walking nicely. The two things combined make for a pleasant walk for everyone. The harness pulls around the front when the dog pulls, causing them to turn around towards you. In my opinion, it's much better and more humane than choke chains and prong collars. And no, there's no such thing as an untrainable dog.

i own shar pei and have bred them…. they are very stubborn dogs and it takes a long time to get them to do anything… the shar pei i own now is almost a year old and i still cannot get her to walk properly on a leash… choke chain or not…. she pulls so hard she will cause blood blisters on her neck and she wont stop… if youre getting angry with the dog that usually wont help… its up to you if you want to take it back to the shelter but i know that my dog is VERY stubborn and rarely listens to me but i wouldnt trade her for anything

I have a 6 month old Char Pei / Pit Bull mix. I have him in a harness because he does pull hard on walks, but I would never use a choker chain. There is a special type of harness that helps with "pulling dogs" and I am going to get that. But, the other day I took him for a walk with treats and told him to heal while I walked him and was amazed that he stayed next to me did pull. I just gave him a treat every so often. So you can try that.
