Im located in Oakland County Michigan. We just purchased a Chinese Shar Pei Puppy for our 9 year old son. ?
We would love to find a Vet who specializes in this breed or who is at least familiar with the special medical need associated with shar peis……Can anyone out there give me a solid recommendation?
Well, this is not in Oakland County, but have you been watching the news about the Labrador found, named Lucky? Dr. Wilson has been caring for this dog at his practice. I know he has a practice in Sterling Hgts., and another in Romeo. We have used his services before and found him very good. We have a Bulldog, and many breeders recommended him to us. Since the Bulldog does have many of the same issues as the Shar Pei, I would recommend him very highly. Also, you many want to call Oakland County Veterinary Referral Services, and see if they can't give you some info. There is also a Gasow Veterinary Clinic on Woodward that is very good.

Who does your breeder recommend?
References :
Your breeder should have a breed specific vet that is very well versed in the breed that they can direct you to.

Regardless, Sharpei's are known for having inverted eyelashes, and for a multitude of skin problems (because of the folds). Suggest you ask your area Vets if they or anyone they know specialize in Dermatology and Entropion.

I would have asked the breeder that before even taking a puppy. The breeder should be able to refer you to their vet. If the breeder is out of state, but shows, tests, etc., they should be able to put you in contact with a local breeder or contact them for you for a referral. Aside from that, contacting a local breed specific rescue can usually get a good result. I found Dr. Wilson (same one another poster mentioned) by looking up boxer rescue sites and seeing that they worked with him specifically because of his breed knowledge. You might even want to contact a vet and ask if they can refer you to a vet that is breed specific. I show my Chinese Cresteds against my vets, LOL So the Boxer goes to Wilson and the Cresteds go see her, as she shows and breeds Cresteds.
