Can a dog have a full blood puppy and a mixed puppy in the same litter?
A friend of mine raises registered shar-pie puppies , her boyfriend has a red healer, her female dog came in heat and she had her male and female in a pen, the red healer jumped the fence and mated with her also. The puppies came out and 1/2 looked like the red healer and shar-pie, and the other 1/2 looked like they were full blooded. Is it possible for the puppies to be mixed and full blooded?

Yes. Its possible for a litter to have multiple fathers.

It doesn't make the full-blooded ones any less full blooded.

Your friend out to consider getting any dog not used in a breeding program altered.

We had a dog at our shelter and it looked like there were SEVERAL fathers. Two looked like rotties, one looked like a saint bernard, two looked like english setters and one looked like a pit bull, all from the same litter.

Oh yes it is very possible! It does happen sometimes when the female is left unattended while in heat too. I hope she can tell the differences if not than she has a very expensive DNA testing ahead of her!

well i've heard of a lady who was white and had a black baby and a white baby at the same time from two diff fathers so i cant imagine it couldn't happen with dogs

Yes, it is possible. If she wants to sell the puppies that appear to be full blooded, she will have to do DNA testing to prove that they are her male's puppies or she won't be able to get papers. I guess she needs to provide better protection for her female.

Absolutely. The female has so many eggs to be fertilized. If bred to the shar-pei, and only a portion of the eggs were fertilized, it is feasible for the remaining eggs to be fertilized when the red healer bred with her. In order to register the puppies, the AKC may require genetic testing to provide proof of parentage of the purebred puppies.

Interesting. So both male dogs GOT her? I have heard that it is possible for two males to have puppies from the same mother in the same litter. I'm not sure if its true or not but I would love to know. I'll keep an I on this question. I'm very curious to know.

I have heard it to be possible but very rare. I have heard this to be possible in humans to. For example, if a women sleeps with two men in one night and she's ovalating and has two or more eggs released at one time, than it is possible for the eggs to be fertilized by the two different men, but like I said it is considered to be rare.

Yep - the female would have had to mated one after the next in order for it to happen as any unfertilised eggs quickly stop accepting sperm after one is fertilised. The puppies would be fraternal siblings.

Please get this female spayed, she obviously isn't being taken proper care of - she should not have been outside in a pen in the first place, a dog's place is in the home - not outside being used as a breeder.

Yes a litter can have multiple sires. The semen can survive for upto 7 days inside the female and some females have split season and release eggs more than once. If your friend is a responsible breeder she should know that it is very unwise to leave a female in season unattended.

The only way to register any of the pups would be with DNA profiles on the parents and the puppies.

Yes. it happens. When I was in grade school, we had a brittany spaniel. Our neighbors had a cockerspaniel. Mom thought they'd make pretty pups. So she bred them. 2 months later, we had 5 beautiful brittany/cocker pups, and one little beagle whodunit! We also had a beagle. Though we kept her up, and him away from her, and never caught her out of the pen, or him in it, he still managed to get ahold of her!

A litter can have more then 1 dad but if she bred with more then one dad the litter will still be mixed and if they was registered you will not be able to register any of the pups

Well, I learned something today.

That might explain the litter my departed Shovelhead came from. Some of the dogs looked significantly different from the others. We knew about one father. Mighta been a mystery visitor…

Genetically it is possible. It is very common in many rodents that will breed with many males while in heat. I haven't heard of it in wild canid, but it is possible.

My guess would be that the puppies are all mixed. With mixes, the chromosomes from mom and dad are randomly mixed meaning that no two puppies are the same. One can look a lot like mom, some can look a lot like dad, and some can look anywhere in between.
