Can some one give me information on Shar Pei dogs?

ok, well I know there are two very disticnt type of shar pei.. the "Meat Mouth" Shar Pei, that many americans LOVE, because of there adorable unique features, and the "Bone Mouth" Shar Pei, That Truely originated from China, and looks distinctly different, but still with the recognizable wrinkles. I'd like to know about both of these. Can any one with First Hand experience, give me details on the two types? Thanks in advance.

I have only met an american shar pei, but I don't believe there are any significant personality differences between the two.

Essentially, they are just two strains of the same breed, with different physical characteristics. I believe the 'meat mouth' veriety with heavier wrinkles was the creation of inbreeding 'bone mouths' in attempts to better the breed for fighting. This may be why american shar pei's are prone to so many health issues, like skin conditions, allergies, eye complications, etc. It has nothing to do with the fact that they are more wrinkley, but the problems they are carrying genetically. When looking for a breeder, just be sure to settle on one that strives to breed for health, and I'm sure even if you go for an american, you can have a healthy dog.

Other than that, the americans require more tedious grooming between wrinkles, with special attention to eyes a lto of the time. The chinese dog does not have such special needs, and is pretty easy to keep comparitively.

they have a particular grooming need. because of all their wrinkles, bacteria and fungus can grow. you have to dig into between all those wrinkles and dry them. this is why shar peis need baths every week unlike other dog breeds.

Why not contact the national breed club and ask about the difference? They will answer general questions. Scan down their home page.

I've trained in the neighborhood of 200 of them. Lots of skin issues. Several had eyelid problems. They ALL stunk. And 99% have fear based aggression issues.
That's not an opinion…it's fact. If you can get around the aggression issues, they make pretty good dogs other than health (mainly skin) issues.
